It seems like the hyper-active Gen Z is giving more importance to cultivating a pragmatic mindset over short-term gains, which is one of the reasons why most of them are seeking clarity and purposefulness when making career choices. These are the findings of a recent study conducted by Apna.co, India’s leading jobs and professional networking platform. Interestingly, Gen Z, which now constitutes over 27 per cent of the country’s workforce, is reshaping workplace dynamics with new priorities.
As well-equipped professionals, they have a thorough feel of workplace preferences and growth expectations in a completely different manner. If one were to go by the study, a significant mindset shift is quite palpable: eight out of 10 respondents prioritise mentorship and clear career growth pathways over traditional metrics like salary, reflecting a stronger focus on personal and professional development, and job satisfaction, thereof. Additionally, a positive work environment emerged as the decisive factor for 74 per cent of respondents, underscoring the importance of inclusivity, respect and active engagement. Unlike the earlier generations, who overlooked mentorship and structured learning, Gen Z professionals demand continuous feedback, collaboration, and recognition.
They don’t prefer working in isolation or receiving occasional acknowledgement, and would rather opt for workplaces that align personal and professional growth. They seek to understand their roles within the larger organisational mission, actively sharing ideas and contributing meaningfully. This marks a shift from the mundane work towards a culture of curiosity, mentorship, and impactful teamwork, emphasising their need for holistic growth and purpose-driven careers. The study points out almost 68 per cent of Gen Z professional prefer a hybrid working model over fully remote or onsite roles. This preference reflects their recognition of the value of team collaboration and in-person mentorship for skill development and cultural alignment. Hybrid work allows them to benefit from office interactions while maintaining flexibility to focus on creative, innovation-driven projects independently. This balance enhances productivity and ensures sustainable work-life integration, and addresses the burnout risks in today’s workforce.
By combining collaboration with flexibility, hybrid work empowers Gen Z to thrive professionally and personally across dynamic workplace environments. This makes for a significant perception as regards job preferences, unlike the earlier generations, for whom financial stability was the primary, and perhaps the only, concern and deciding factor. One has to remember that the future of work is being shaped by the aspirations and values of the emerging workforce. The Gen Z generation is redefining professional success—moving beyond monetary rewards and thirsting for growth-oriented roles. They are curious, aware, self-confidence and eager to make meaningful contribution while expecting clearer career trajectories and alignment with their personal values.
